KGS News May 2013

Coming Up

Our 2013 Gourd Show is almost here !!!!  Check the show schedule for details on where to be and when to be there.  It's not too late to enter your masterpieces, but the clock is ticking...  Remember that the theme this year is “Doodlin’ Around With Gourds”.  There are three Artist’s Challenge classes, each with a $15 prize for first place, so start doodling!!  There are other cash prize categories, too. Look for the $$$ above the entry class number in the show booklet

Check the list of vendors who will be at the show, and what they will be bringing. There is contact information, too, if you want to have them bring a specific item for you. Click here or go to the list under the ART SHOWS tab.

Doodling is easy - and there is still plenty of time to get that gourd or gourd piece out.  Looking for inspiration?  Check out YouTube if you are a visual person.  Check out some ZenTangle or Doodling books at the library.  Check out our show vendors.  There are a couple who will be bringing books to the show.  If you live in Louisville, Preston Arts Center has some.  If you live near Hartford, CeCe Thomas has some. And of course, you can just sit down and doodle!!  No formal education required!!!

You Missed It - Catch it Next Time

April 20, 2013 AGS Certified Judges Training
We had a hugely successful AGS Judges training session.  There are five new AGS-certified judges from Kentucky (Pablo Briseño, Nona Boughman, Dot Drexler, Jim Drexler, and Beverly Morris ), two new judges from Ohio (Joy Jackson and Renee Velzka), three re-certified judges from Kentucky (Nancy Inman, Lois Platt and Carol Prather), plus four instructors (Janet Barnett, Jan Banta-Briseño, Carol Bishop and Jane Waits). Attend the Saturday, May 18, gourd show dinner for "graduation exercises".

April 13 Membership Meeting
We had a good time at our April 13 membership meeting.  Everyone there shared insights on using watercolors on gourds - and put them into practice! Janet Barnett donated egg gourds, Katherine Taylor, the Daniel Smith watercolor rep, donated samples of watercolor ground, and Preston Arts Center donated watercolor paint samples. Carol Bishop donated masking material and watercolor-appropriate spray finish and pulled it all together. Click here for a handout of tips.

Oh, we did a little work, too, on 2013 show planning, election of officers, and judges training. Plan to attend the next meeting - we have more fun in store!!  All work and no play makes a dull gourdhead smile

March 7, 8 & 9 GED
Our March GEDs with
Marla Helton were a great success - a good time was had by all, and we learned new techniques for weaving on a gourd and much more.  Thanks, Marla!  If you missed it, watch for our next GEDs, and don't forget to register for workshops at the 2013 Gourd Show in May.  Pictures from the workishops will be added to the GALLERY after we catch up on show activity..
